Bikkuri Japanese Restaurant

I was downtown.  It was lunchtime and I was hungry.  My first thought, Marche – a lovely restaurant in the BCE place.  But, before I could make it there, I passed by Bikkuri and was invited in by curiosity.  Inside it’s airy.  Modern decor and natural lighting opens the space through large windows.  Servers are quick and pleasant.

A green salad is a must order (always), it sets the tone of what is to come.  Here the crisp lettuce and creamy miso dressing is balanced and worth the price (and maybe the lunch).  Edemame could use a little salt.

The miso soup is perfectly salty and tastes as it should.  Oh, the Enoki and beef roll… Chewy, charcoal flavours roll together make this one of the best examples of the mushroom/beef roll.

Tempura was normal, nothing fancy but a little pricey for the serving.  Finally the sushi. Spicy salmon sushi rolls are nicely balanced with heat.   I love the combo of salmon and avocado together and the Alaska rolls are just that.  Not sure why they call it the “Alaska Roll”?  The salmon isn’t smoked, nevertheless it’s a good thing.  Salmon skin hand roll is crisp and earthy.  BUT…  The tobiko sushi was gross.  Sure it looks appealing; however the eggs tasted the way mothballs smell.

Would I come back again? No. It’s not the worst I’ve have, but there are just too many other Japanese restaurants to experience, for a lot less money.
